The current place of El Hondo is located on land belonging to the former lagoon in Elche. This was acclimated and dried to utilize their land in agriculture. These dams, along with several ponds and areas of salt marsh that surround them, are 2.387 hectares that cover the site.
In the Hondo different environments are distinguished, according to the degree of swamping, as well as the quality of the water: the reservoirs, the pools, the salt marsh and the peripheral areas. The reservoirs have the slightly saline water though with a lot of algae, for what presents a greenish aspect. The reservoirs are surrounded totally by formations of reed-grass.
The peripheral pools, which can be seen from the viewing-point, are constituted by waters of little depth, with a high degree of salinity, and in general less contaminated. The reed-grass alternates with the rush in the most saline zones and there abound floating and submerged aquatic plants.
The salt marsh consists of land that are flooded only temporarily and there are species such as Salicornia, Limonium and Artrocnemum.
In the outskirts areas have been installed different cultivations between them which it is necessary to emphasize the palm, and some activities such as hunting and fishing. The eucalyptuses, which are find along the tour bordering on the principal channel, they cross the whole place and constitute an image typical of the zone.
Although they have been built by man have been integrated into the landscape and provide shelter and nesting birds such as raptors, in particular, the marsh harrier, and osprey.
It is the great abundance and diversity of the populations of birds what has motivated its cataloguing as "Wetland of International Interest", managing to count approximately 170 different species between which it is necessary to emphasize the colonies of herons constituted by the Purple Heron, Hammer, common Heron, Garcilla bueyera and the scanty Garcilla cangrejera.
It crosses the old way that was joining the populations of Dolores and Catral. During the tour we will be able to contemplate the garden with its cultures. Interesting it is also the step along the Estate of the nuns, where we can contemplate a house of typical rural architecture.
