Saint Jerome’s Parish Church

Finished in 1622 by mediation of the family Rocamora, it is of Renaissance late style. It has three naves, a central and two laterals, in one of them we find the image of the Virgen del Rosario, patron saint of the municipality and in the altar we find to San Jerónimo, patron of the town. Stands out a small tower with clock decorated with windows and the nobility shield of the Rocamora worked in stone in the facade.

It is located in the slope area and new construction. It is the destination of a pilgrimage that takes place in early May, the day of the Cross. It is a modern construction made with a slab of white cement that connects with the modern architecture of the twenty-first century.

Near the town is the Paraje del Cabezo, with abundance of pine. It is a wonderful watchtower from that offers the broad perspective of the Vega Baja. The walks are frequent to the site and the social luncheon between neighbours. La Rambla de Abanilla is an interesting sample of reeds, taráis and oleanders.


The Feast of a Patron Saint

The patron saint of Benferri is the Virgin of the Rosario and its patron is San Jerónimo, the festivals are celebrated on August 16 and September 30 respectively. Before the celebration of the feast of a patron saint is the election of the Queens of the holidays. Besides the day May 3 is celebrated the pilgrimage of the Cross Day, festivity in which a local food is a realized.

When the festival of the Virgen del Rosario takes place, the group of Auroros, commemorate the Rosario de la Aurora, men and women perform an night tour through the streets and squares of the village, singing songs that have been transmitted by oral tradition from generation to generation since the Middle Ages.

The departure of the procession takes place in silence from the door of the parish church at 6.00 o'clock in the morning, accompanied by lanterns, bells and drums under the banner of the Rosary. The route is usually always the same and during this one a series of stops are done in certain points, and then breaks the silence with the intonation of religious hymns. The morning ends with a festive chocolate. The last days of October there is a concentration of the Auroros in a Municipality of Vega Baja which attracts followers of this important tradition.

Also, competitions of paellas and parades of fancy dress used to be celebrated.

With the arrival of spring the Holy Week comes. This liturgical time is lived in Benferri as the most religious intensity of all the year. The benferrejos celebrate passional processions and acts and religious offices in which almost all the people takes part actively.
